Orpheus Presents SOUND EFFECT, Bach, Beethoven and Modernism

A panel discussion featuring

Evelyn Glennie

Flushing Library Auditorium

41-17 Main Street, Flushing, NY 11355

Tel: 718-661-1200

Composers respond powerfully to the sights and sounds of their immediate surroundings, often calling upon the music of their own people and nation as inspiration for their music. Felix Mendelssohn, a brilliant composer and “renaissance” man, who composed his “Scottish” Symphony in 1842 at the age of 33, was one of the first composers to “paint” musical landscapes. Peter Maxwell Davies and James MacMillan, both native Scots, weave into their music the folk tunes and indigenous sounds of their native land, even to the point of employing bagpipes in Maxwell Davies’ “An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise.” How have these influences changed through the generations? How can an ancient folk melody take on new significance, even to the point of sounding “modern?”
Please join-
MODERATOR: David C. Speedie, Carnegie Corporation of New York and
PANELISTS:
Larry Todd, Mendelssohn scholar; Professor of Music,
Duke University
Brian Gill, Concerts and Lectures Department,
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Evelyn Glennie, Percussion virtuoso, as they explore the subject of "influence and inspiration" for these great composers. Presented by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

Michael Faber & A L Kennedy: Readings

A genuinely unclassifiable talent, Michel Faber has rapidly risen to the top of the literary tree as the author of the New York Times bestselling Victorian tour de force The Crimson Petal and the White. And as his more recent book The Courage Consort shows, he is also a master of the short form. A L Kennedy, author of the hugely acclaimed novel Paradise, is one of Britain’s most iconoclastic and fiercely independent talents, and has remained one of the world’s leading novelists and short story writers since her breakthrough in the early nineties.

This unique event brings two of the most respected Scottish-based writers together in a joint event to read from their latest works and take part in a thought-provoking question and answer session.

In association with Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature.

Throughout Tartan Week extracts from ‘Geordie’ will be performed in Grand Central Station as part of the Scottish Village. Scottish Youth Theatre will also be hosting a series of workshops with the city’s young people, taking place at schools or youth centres in and around New York’s communities.
