Orpheus Presents SOUND EFFECT, Bach, Beethoven and Modernism A panel discussion featuring Evelyn Glennie |
Flushing Library Auditorium 41-17 Main Street, Flushing, NY 11355 Tel: 718-661-1200 |
Composers respond powerfully to the sights and sounds of their immediate surroundings, often calling upon the music of their own people and nation as inspiration for their music. Felix Mendelssohn, a brilliant composer and “renaissance” man, who composed his “Scottish” Symphony in 1842 at the age of 33, was one of the first composers to “paint” musical landscapes. Peter Maxwell Davies and James MacMillan, both native Scots, weave into their music the folk tunes and indigenous sounds of their native land, even to the point of employing bagpipes in Maxwell Davies’ “An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise.” How have these influences changed through the generations? How can an ancient folk melody take on new significance, even to the point of sounding “modern?” |
