For over 800 years, Barra Castle has been a family home to several families. The castle, although technically a fortified house rather than a castle, is located in Aberdeenshire. The current owners are Sir David and Lady Sarah Stephen, who live in the castle and operate a produce shop and a wedding venue onsite.
The castle has been renovated many times and has no windows or doors on the ground floor other than the main door. All additions made over the centuries have copied the original so that the castle today looks as if it was all built at the same time. The older parts of the structure date from the early 13th century, when Barra Castle was built to be the seat of the King family.
Barra Castle has been noted as “one of the most attractive of the lesser castles of this great country.” Learn more about the current use of the castle here: https://barracastle.co.uk/
