National Capital Tartan Day Committee - Washington, DC

Annual Tartan Day Symposium and Congressional Reception on Capitol Hill

Symposium 2:00pm – 4:30pm

Panel Discussion - "Political and Economic Implications for the United States Should Scotland Leave the United Kingdom to Become an Independent Nation"

On January 20, 2012, Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, announced that a referendum on independence would be put to the voters in Scotland in the fall of 2014. Though the idea of Scottish independence has emotional appeal to many Scottish-Americans and other "Diaspora Scots" around the world, the geopolitical ramifications on U.S. foreign and economic policy, and the impact on our national security strategy of an independent Scotland had not been well aired in the USA. Before coming to power, the Scottish National Party long called for a neutral Scotland, on the model of the Republic of Ireland, to include Scottish withdrawal from NATO and the removal of nuclear submarines from their base at Faslane, in western Scotland. What would be the impact for the U.S. if these things were to happen? In addition, the impact on global markets of a breakup of the U.K. could be quite destabilizing, with ripple effects on the American economy. Few Scottish-Americans had publically focused on these aspects. This discussion looked at these and related issues from a strictly American perspective.
