The American-Scottish Foundation is proud to designate the Scottish Flag Trust as a directed giving project of the Foundation.

For generations, the Scottish Flag Trust has cared for the birthplace of Scotland’s national flag, including the Saltire Memorial and the Flag Heritage Centre. Today, that responsibility has become increasingly urgent.

Independent assessments have confirmed that the existing memorial is suffering from significant structural deterioration. Sadly, repair is not a viable long-term solution. To ensure this nationally important site can continue to inspire future generations, a new Saltire Monument must now be created.

We Need Your Support

Backed by local communities, cross-party political leaders, and our Patron, HRH The Princess Royal, this project is building momentum. With your support, we can create a lasting monument worthy of Scotland’s national flag.

Our Vision for the Future

The new Saltire Monument will provide a fitting and enduring commemoration of the origins of Scotland’s flag while transforming the visitor experience for generations to come. The £600,000 project will include:

• A Permanent New Monument: worthy of one of Scotland’s most important national symbols.
• Accessibility for All: For the first time, we are installing an all-abilities, wheelchair-friendly route to the monument.
• State-of-the-Art Storytelling: A new AV system will bring the story of the ancient battle and the Saltire legend to life.
• Digital Education: Partnering with East Lothian Council, we will create high-quality digital learning resources in civics and history for schools.

Donor Level

All Donors
The name of every donor to the Appeal, large or small, will be recorded in the Book of the Saltire on display in the Flag Heritage Centre.

Flagmaster | $150
You will be able to sponsor the Saltire flying above the monument on a date of your choice. Your name, with the date, will be added to the records in the Flag Heritage Centre, and you will receive a certificate of confirmation.

For larger donations, there will be a permanent acknowledgement at the monument as follows:

Companions of the Saltire | $1,500
The names of Companions will be inscribed on stone pavers set within the pathways leading to the monument, ensuring your support leaves a lasting footprint on the approach.

Stewards of the Saltire | $15,000
The paved circular base in front of the monument, incorporating a map of St Andrew and Scottish Societies worldwide, will be a prominent feature. As foundational supporters, the names of Stewards will be permanently inscribed within this stone base.

Guardians of the Saltire Monument | $35,000
As our highest level of acknowledgement, Guardians provide the bedrock of the project. As a prominent place of honour, their names will be engraved into the fabric of the monument wall as a lasting recognition of their support.
